Essence
The Moon works by imagination. Feminine, watery and Cancer-ruled, it takes in more than it can account for — mood, undercurrent, the thing not said — and stores it as image rather than fact. It is passive in the technical sense: it receives first and acts afterwards, which makes it slow to declare and unusually accurate when it finally does.
Its register is spiritual and its charge magnetic; it draws confidences it never asked for, and it dreams in detail. The cycle is short, twenty-eight days, so its weather turns quickly and a mood taken as permanent is rarely more than a month old. The gift and the difficulty are the same faculty: perception that arrives without proof.
In the portrait
In the outward self the Moon reads as elusiveness — hard to pin, easy to be near. In the inner, feeling self it is a rich private world that may never be shown to anyone. As the inherited life lesson it asks that feeling be checked against fact, and in the subconscious layer it is where old fears arrive dressed as premonition.
