Arcanum XV of XXII

The Devil

The Devil is appetite and attachment. This energy is magnetic, worldly and unembarrassed about wanting things, which makes it effective where politer energies stall; unexamined, it binds itself to what it cannot leave and calls the chain a choice.

Essence

The Devil is appetite. It wants things, says so, and moves toward them with a directness politer energies find faintly shocking. Fire drives it and the material plane is its territory: the body, work, pleasure, influence, the physical facts of a life. It is magnetic in company, electric in charge — sudden, hot, quick to commit — and almost never bored.

Pisces sits underneath, which is the part people miss. The wanting is not merely acquisitive; it is a hunger for merger, for being absorbed into something. Its knowledge is instinctive and fast: it reads what a person actually desires within minutes. Its timing is never, and the question it lives with is what it is attached to, and why.

In the portrait

In the outward self, the Devil is charisma and appetite that others feel immediately. In the subconscious layer it is quieter and harder: the attachment that is never discussed. As the inherited life lesson it points at a family relationship with excess or dependency; on the tension line it appears as the bargain made with oneself to keep something that costs too much.
